So I'm on Facebook and I see something from the Playstation Page. I click on it ( blog.us.playstation.com/2010/07/15/help-defend-gaming-sign-the-gamer-petition/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ECA_071510 ) and guess what? It turns out that in the US, some assholes are challenging the laws that video games are protected by the first amendment. If those idiots win, video gaming will be dealt a near-fatal blow. To tl;dr this article: essentially, the State of California is attempting to reverse the First Amendment for video games: in other words, moving them on from being treated like movies and books and treating them like tobacco and firearms. I decided to sticky it because I believe everyone here is a gamer, including me, and no matter what form, this affects all game franchises, on all platforms, across the entire planet. It'll be unstickyed after a few days. I'm not sure if this thread should be here or on the Debate Room: if it should go into the Debate Room, then move it. I don't mind. EDIT 1: You don't HAVE to sign the petition, but I recommend you should. Ignore all the ECA stuff, and if you don't sign the petition, at least keep an eye on this case and hope that the good guys win.

So, what, video games would be made illegal in the state?

I doubt enough people will be in favor of it for it to pass. And if it somehow does pass, I doubt anyone involved will get reelected.

If they do it I am convinced America is run by idiots....or overprotective mothers I guess if it passes I will have to move back up North and start a Smuggling Ring that gets video games, pharmaceutical products, moose, maple syrup, igloos and hockey players from Canada

If they do it I am convinced America is run by idiots... Took ya that long to figure this out? No this merely adds more proof to it (if they pass it). If they do this to video games then they should do it to movies, TV, books and other forms of enteratainment seeing as you can see/hear the same amount of violence, drug use, sexual content, cussing and "dirty" humor as all the other enterainment things. However at least Video Games require (by some state laws I don't know every state law but I know they do it here) that you need an 17+ year old human to phyically buy you a Rated M Game (games that have this "bad" content that you can easily find in TV shows that are geared for 14+ year olds with a simple View Disression is Advised warning on the TV that any person who is not scared by the warning can easily ignore.

Danny: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this. Sorry about that.
The video game violence law has been adapted by every state. If it's stricken down, it affects the entire US. And since countries base their laws on other countries' successful laws, it means either games elsewhere either suck or are treated the same way.
It's especially worrysome for me, seeing as I be Canadian, and the Canada/US video game market is basically the same (Assassin's Creed was made by Ubisoft Montreal, methinks), if this law passes I'm not getting games until I'm thirteen.
If it wins, then at least there's flash games.
And there is one factor going for us. Americans know it as the First Amendment, we know it as freedom of speech. Basically, they're attempting to overturn a law which laps with an amendment, and if my rickety knowledge of the Constitution is correct, very few people have ever won against amendments.
We've got some stuff going for us. The forecast is good.

Just a quick update, but this thread has stayed stickied for too long and it's not like an update on the whole case is going to come in, so I unstickied the thread.
Once the final results are in I'll re-sticky it and post them here. Until then, I'll declutter the stickied threads page and let it drop down.
