The Astray are a rebel faction formed around the time of the destruction of the colony world, New Jerauslem, in the fall of 2553. The faction itself is actually made up of several allied rebel groups from various systems, a recognizable one would be the Eridanus Insurrectionists. Currently, The Astray reside in the Firefly system, in orbit around Serenity VII. Fortunatly, Firefly system is of no strategic value to the Rifter Empire, or the Covenant Remnant.
Serenity VII is both a symbol of The Astray's last battle to control Firefly, as the UNSC and Elite armies once controlled this system until The Astray's first armies created small rebellions on each of the thirteen planets. Unfortunatly, the UNSC/Elite alliance completely glassed the thirteenth planet, Derelict, for two reasons; To kill two hundred entire divisions of Astray soldiers, AND to make an example out of anyone who tries to take a UNSC controlled system with petty tricks. Unfortunatly, this example only shook the Hornet's nest and caused The Astray to become more determined to wipe the UNSC/Elite Alliance out of Firefly system.

Over the course of five years, The Astray have come to confescate endless amounts of Sangheili and Human weaponry. While they rely on Human ships for space, any Sangheili vehicle is painted blood red for easy indentification in the field. As far as Human tech goes, it's The Astray's primary choice when fighting as Elite weaponry is fairly scarce. Several ONI Prowlers, UNSC Firgates, Destroyers, and even a few Halcyon-class cruisers are in the hands of The Astray.
Pretty much any species(excluding Rifter) is open to join The Astray, so long as they swear an oath not to betray. The primary leaders themselves are scattered throughout the Firefly system.
