History
As the might of the Forerunner crumbled under the relentless assault from the Flood, the great power of the Forerunner had no real chance of ever returning to its former might. Was this a good thing? For the galaxy, no. Should the Flood be successful, the galaxy would be in dire need of rescue, by the machines and contraptions left behind by the Forerunners. An ancient caste of Forerunners, preaching heathen rituals and terrible practises from before the war were eventually exiled from Forerunner space as the waning days of the Forerunner Empire happened, placed in a large frigate and set adrift in the furthest reaches of space, to die in solitude. As the Halos were detonated for the first time and the Forerunner Empire was vanquished, their might shattered, leaving an effectively fledgling galaxy to rebuild from the terrible catastrophe that had wracked the galaxy. The betrayal of AI Mendicant Bias meant that the Forerunners were unable to use the Shield World of Onyx, yet this didn't apply to the Rifters, those exiled from Forerunner society and harbouring bitter relations towards them. They survived the blast and, travelled to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, to the Rift of space, to survive in solitude, being away from the main galaxy.
October the 7th, 2525, saw another drastic development in the history and course of the galaxy, with the outbreak Human-Covenant War, between the two, seemingly, largest heirs to the Empire of the Forerunner, the UNSC and the Covenant. Hidden and dormant in the Rift, news of this war eventually reached the Rifters, and they raised themselves from dormancy with a plan. The war would eventually see one side win, and that side would be weak, strong enough only to rebuild, after the events of the war, and that would be when the Rifters would start their plan; to assail the victor in an attempt to make themselves masters of the Forerunner Legacy.
The defection of the Sangheili race to the UNSC, leaving only the Jiralhanae to succeed them as Covenant 'Loyalists' meant that the UNSC suddenly had a good chance of success in this war, with SPARTAN supersoldiers along side the Elites in a devestating battle force. The Covenant Loyalists had little chance and, after a showdown on Installation 00, the Covenant were shattered by the UNSC, exiling the Jiralhanae from known space. Yet the war had taken a drastic toll on the UNSC, and the Rifters knew it. Stirring themselves from the Rift and rising in such spacecraft as the Forerunner had used, albeit in less advanced technological levels, and they arrived back in known space, the Arbiters of their Exile long since dead. Allying themselves with the Peacekeepers, in an attempt to ingratiate themselves with the powers that be, they set about establishing the forces in the galaxy, the UNSC being the main one, and they started feeding information to the Syphodyte and United Rebel Alliance in an attempt to bring about the destruction of the UNSC.
Yet the UNSC were harder than they first appeared; the war, although shattering many of their resources, had also served to harden them, making them more battle hardened and war ready. The attempts at feeding information failed, and the Rifters set about trying to forge a false alliance with the UNSC themselves, in an attempt to bring about the destruction of the UNSC. The gas mine on Threshold, fallen into the planets destructive atmosphere during the war, was rescued from the depths of destruction by the Rifters, and re-established to work on ghostly jobs, in complete secret. The UNSC imagined it to be a new, deserted gas mines, and the tales of haunting, ghostly apparitions and terrifying noises kept most away. Eventually, the Rifters managed to contact the UNSC under the guise of assistance to the Peacekeepers. The guise of that is a lie, and the Rifters are ready to launch an attack on the UNSC…
